Van Os, a Dutch artist born in 1782, was a master of still life and botanical illustration, following in the footsteps of his father, Jan van Os, and becoming an influential figure in the 19th-century Dutch art scene. His works are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and vibrant use of color, qualities that are beautifully demonstrated in this illustration of a butterfly.

Van Os was part of the Dutch Romantic movement, which sought to capture the beauty and transience of nature. His philosophical approach was rooted in the Enlightenment's fascination with the natural sciences, and he often sought to convey the intricate beauty and complexity of nature. In "Boven- en onderaanzicht van een vlinder," van Os presents a butterfly from both top and bottom views, showcasing his technical skill and deep appreciation for the subject.

This piece, a superb example of natural history illustration, employs watercolor and gouache techniques to achieve its lifelike detail.
