Known as the "Raphael of flowers," Redouté was a preeminent botanical illustrator whose works bridged the gap between art and science. Born in 1759 in what is now Belgium, Redouté moved to Paris, where he became a court artist for Marie Antoinette and later served under Empress Joséphine. His life spanned a tumultuous period in French history, witnessing the fall of the monarchy and the rise of the Napoleonic Empire, which influenced the patronage and themes of his work.

Redouté's style is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a delicate, almost ethereal rendering of his subjects. In "Rosa Centifolia Anglica Rubra," he employs watercolor on vellum, a technique that allows for a luminous and precise depiction of the flower's intricate structure. This piece is part of his celebrated series "Les Roses," which is renowned for its scientific accuracy and aesthetic beauty. Redouté's philosophical approach was to marry art with botany, capturing the essence and beauty of nature with a focus on realism and clarity.

This work is significant in the art world as it represents a pinnacle of botanical illustration, influencing both scientific and artistic communities.
