This piece, a striking commentary on societal contradictions, exemplifies Crawford's unique approach to illustration, where humor and satire intersect with cultural critique.

Born in 1869, Will Crawford was an American illustrator and cartoonist known for his sharp wit and keen observational skills. His career flourished during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period marked by rapid industrialization and social change in the United States. Crawford's work often reflected these themes, utilizing satire to critique and comment on contemporary issues.

In "Hands up!", Crawford employs a photomechanical process, a popular technique of the time, allowing for mass reproduction and wide dissemination of images.
