Sekka, born in 1866 in Kyoto, emerged as a pivotal figure in the revival of the Rinpa school, an influential movement known for its decorative style and emphasis on nature. His work was instrumental in the Shin-hanga (new prints) movement, which sought to rejuvenate traditional Japanese art forms in response to Western influence.

"Basket" epitomizes Sekka's innovative approach, where he employs a minimalist yet dynamic composition that captures the ephemeral beauty of nature. His use of bold, flat colors and rhythmic patterns reflects the Rinpa tradition while incorporating elements of Art Nouveau, which he encountered during his travels in Europe. The subject matter—a simple, elegant basket—serves as a metaphor for the transitory nature of life and the interconnectedness of all things, a recurring theme in Sekka's oeuvre.

Through this piece, Sekka conveys a philosophical meditation on beauty, impermanence, and harmony, inviting viewers to find profound meaning in everyday objects. The original "Basket" is currently held in the collection of the Kyoto National Museum, where it continues to inspire and captivate audiences with its timeless elegance and cultural significance.

Printed to order on canvas and set in a natural wood floater frame.
