Piet Mondrian's "Composition with Red, Yellow, Blue, and Black" (1921) stands as a seminal work in the evolution of modern art, epitomizing the De Stijl movement's pursuit of pure abstraction and universality. Mondrian, a Dutch painter born in 1872, was a pivotal figure in the development of abstract art. His artistic journey was deeply influenced by the tumultuous shifts of the early 20th century, including World War I and the rise of industrialization, which propelled him to seek a new artistic language that transcended the chaos of the times.

Mondrian's style, characterized by the use of a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the primary colors red, blue, and yellow, was a radical departure from traditional representation. This piece exemplifies his philosophical approach known as "neoplasticism," which aimed to express a sense of harmony and order through the reduction of form and color. By distilling art to its basic elements, Mondrian sought to convey a universal aesthetic, one that reflected the underlying structure of reality.

The genre of this work is abstract art, with a focus on geometric abstraction. Mondrian's technique involved meticulous planning and execution, using oil on canvas to achieve a pristine, balanced composition. "Composition with Red, Yellow, Blue, and Black" is significant for its influence on modern art, inspiring movements such as Minimalism and influencing architectural design. The original painting is housed in the Kunsthaus Zürich, where it continues to captivate audiences with its timeless vision of order and simplicity.
