Myself: Portrait - Landscape (1890) by Henri Rousseau. Historic Art for Art Lovers Series. Giclee Fine Art Print on 200 gsm Fine Art Paper. Premium Wood Framed Wall Art. Original Aspect Ratio

Henri Rousseau's "Myself: Portrait - Landscape" (1890) is a fascinating self-portrait that invites viewers into the whimsical and enigmatic world of this self-taught artist. Known as "Le Douanier" due to his day job as a customs officer, Rousseau emerged as a pivotal figure in the Post-Impressionist movement, though his work defies easy categorization. Born in 1844 in Laval, France, Rousseau's artistic journey began later in life, and he was often met with skepticism by the art establishment of his time. However, his naive style, characterized by vivid colors and dreamlike compositions, eventually garnered admiration from avant-garde artists such as Picasso and the Surrealists.

In "Myself: Portrait - Landscape," Rousseau presents himself as a confident artist, surrounded by a fantastical landscape that blurs the line between reality and imagination. This work exemplifies Rousseau's unique approach, merging portraiture with landscape in a manner that challenges conventional boundaries. The painting is imbued with a sense of personal mythology, as Rousseau positions himself as both the creator and the subject of his own narrative.

Employing a flat, almost childlike technique, Rousseau's use of bold outlines and simplified forms conveys a sense of sincerity and directness. The painting is a testament to Rousseau's belief in the power of imagination and his desire to transcend the mundane. "Myself: Portrait - Landscape" is housed in the National Gallery in Prague, where it continues to captivate audiences with its enigmatic charm and the artist's unyielding vision.
